SPACE: Understanding Dementia in the Moment
A Practical Method for Understanding and Supporting Someone Living with Dementia
When someone is living with dementia, it can be difficult to understand what is happening in the moment, especially when behaviour feels confusing, unexpected, or out of character.
SPACE is a simple, practical framework designed to help carers make sense of these moments as they happen. It offers a way to pause, look more closely at what might be shaping the person’s experience, and respond with greater understanding.
Rather than focusing only on behaviour, SPACE widens attention to five key areas that can influence how a moment feels:
- S – Senses
- P – Physical
- A – Atmosphere
- C – Cognitive Changes
- E – Engagement and Expectations
These domains provide a clear, memorable way to navigate uncertainty and support more meaningful, person-led interaction without the need for formal training.
From the book
When someone is living with dementia, what we see on the outside does not always clearly reflect what is happening on the inside.
At times this can appear as distress, agitation, anger, refusal, or behaviour that feels confusing or out of character. These moments can be unsettling, especially when the cause is not clear.
Their thoughts, feelings, discomfort, confusion, and needs may still be present, but the usual pathways for communicating them have become less reliable.
What appears outwardly as behaviour may be shaped by sensory discomfort, emotional atmosphere, or mental effort that is no longer visible to others.
This means we often need to widen our attention to understand what the person may be trying to signal.
SPACE is a practical way to pause and consider the different influences that may be shaping a moment, helping us respond with greater understanding.
