A small handheld musical instrument with metal keys that are gently plucked with the thumbs to produce different notes. The kalimba can be held, played and explored, offering an engaging combination of sound, movement and touch. No musical knowledge is needed to enjoy making sounds with it.

Each item has been chosen with later-stage dementia particularly in mind, for qualities that may make it discoverable and invite interest, such as its texture, colour, familiarity, movement or sound. Everyone is different, so please consider the individual’s interests, abilities, preferences and circumstances when deciding whether an item is suitable, including whether support or supervision may be appropriate.
